That's what I was thinking. But you know what? I might use your epay suggestion for a kitchen cutting board cart I am going to build. Thanks
    That's a big boat!

I honestly think that poplar will be your cheaper, stronger choice if you will stain it, or even if you want to paint. I was very much involved in a wood shop as a "high end finisher", using all kinds of wood, solvent based (my preferred) and water based finishes.

That is some nice looking stuff. I just have never saw it here in Colorado. I wonder if it is a coastal type product? Closest thing I have seen here is Brazilian Redwood. Very dense, very hard, very expensive, but nice.

I will say this much from building my tank so far...dont go cheap especially when buying wood. I bought my 2x6s and 2x4s from Lowes and Homedepot (which I knew the wood wasn't perfectly straight) but man when I put the stand together I noticed how bowed the wood really was. Next time I will go to 84 Lumber or Carter Lumber and use better quality wood.

I guess you can use any strong enough wood, Matt. The secret is on the waterproofing. Make sure you seal the faces and the end grain for a moisture/water resistant piece.... I've even seen the resin covered plywood.... just good waterproofing.... that's the secret IMHO.

I JUST looked at that black stain the other day at the home improvement store and CUSSED myself for not thinking of it before I painted my stand black. It would've looked WAY better stained black.

Dang this thread still has legs - great info!

For the record - I have paused my build as I found some success tracking down a pre-built with a last-round effort - anyone considering this, search for 'media cabinet' with the dimensions you want on sears, kmart, etc.. I have found one that fits my needs, just paying some bills first. Still a chance I may go build one if this one does not work out:

Sears: Online department store featuring appliances, tools, fitness equipment and more

I was thinking I could just hole-saw in the back for some pipes for the fuge and do some emergency drain stuff for safe-guarding - my pause is also because I would really like to see this in person but it is an Internet only deal. :p The doors are attractive to me to block light and to help child-proof from my kid.
