planning at this point to use probably 2 inches of sand in the main tank with a kittylitter, live sand bed in the refugium. live sand is expensive, was planning on getting a little bit to for the refugium and some to seed the main tank.

any recommendations on dead sand? and what do you do about matching the live sand and dead sand or does it not matter? sorry if these are stupid questions. I haven't had a saltwater tank in 10 years and I'm helping my neighbor set one up for his son. I'm in south east florida

CaribSea - Sugar Pink Oolite - other have used kitty litter - but on a system with a refugium where you spend $$$$$$$$$, does it really make sense to save $30 and risk using kitty litter? Dead sand is relatively cheap and you only need a small fraction of the dead sand mass in livesand to seed it. The more you seed the faster it will colonize, to a point.

Don't bother with commercial live, not enough bacteria in it to matter. Go with dry sugar sized aragonite.
