Yes but you might be able to find a cheap, clip on PC light to put over it or, depending on where your lights are positioned now, it might very well get enough light from your bulbs.

What size tank? Got a skimmer?

I don't have in my 12 gal Nano...but keep close eye on and do a +- 4 gallon water change weekly. Would do more often if needed. --- clean filter media/change carbon and use poly-filter also. (can cut up in thirds so lasts much longer)

Mature LR helps also.

Nitrates have yet to climb above .5
