Not necessarily. :) Someone has to come up with these ideas. Before the Herbie/Durso overflow designs, people had loud overflows that would get clogged. Who came up with these ideas? Fellow reefers. Whom experimented with their ideas before finding the result(s) we have today.

Good answers/solutions start with a question or problem.

Nevermind, the whole idea of trying to recycle used tank water with a filter is far from thinking outside the box. No offense.

lol what about the elements that have been used up? lol
what about the nitrates and phosphates?

if you can fix that with your old water why not just do it in the tank so you don't have to remove it.

I just don't see the point. Just do a water change. Water is the least of the expenses. All water will return to the earth anyhow so it's not "wasting" it.

This can be done and it is a good idea. You're just thinking about it in an odd fashion. You could put all your waste water through a series of filters to pull nitrates out (refugium), and dose chemicals to get the parameters back in line. Then you could put that water back into the system. When you think of it like this, it truly does sound like an awesome idea, but why not just add the refugium and dosing directly to your tank? You will then never need to take any water out and thus will waste less. Before going down this path though, you should consider the cost of the chemicals and new filtration and see if that balances out against water changes for you.
