I have a 54g saltwater tank and I hire some people to take care of it. They bring their own ro water and change water every 3 weeks. But after a few days i get this red algae on the sand all the time. Tanks been up since sept. They recently put some kind of powder in the filter but that didnt work. I dont want to have to keep paying them to try different things. Just ugly to look at.

I have a powerjet moving the water around.

    Thanks

Pictures? Most likely its cyano aglea. To much nutrients or overfeeding. There is possibly phosphate in the water. Are you using rodi water? Have you check your parameters?

To solve the problem. Point a powerdead towards it and irritate the hell out of it. Turn your lights off for acouple days. Remember to acclimate your light if you do this. What kind of lights are you using run a phosphate reactor run cheatos or gfo, get a clean up crew.

Thanks...I'll take a pic tomorrow when the light is on. I have a aquaticlife light. run the main lights for 10hrs, soft light hr before/after then moonlights. I feed them 1 cube/day. They did put powder for the phoshates. I got some coral, 6 fish. Not much cleanup crews actually. My rocks are purple. I got fluval 305, remora and aquaclear filter. yes it is rodi water they use for all their other customers.

I agree with bobssectsn, most likely cyano. The chemical they added was probably chemiclean. In my opinion chemiclean is only a temporary fix.

+1 morninwood. Chemiclean does work, but it only puts a bandaid on the REAL problem and you ill most likely have another cyano outbreak. What kind of fish do you have? Seems that a cube every day might be a bit much possibly leaving some to float around and feed your cyano. Also, you may want to watch them clean your tank. What are they doing to properly maintain your canister? Just changing media? If so, they need to be sure to start washing out bio balls and or the cyramic jobies A LITTLE BIT AT A TIME. Not all at once...this is vital (maybe just 1/4 of them each cleaning session. If you leave these portions of the canister not cleaned every once in awhile you may end up leaching some nasties back into your tank that may be part of your algae problem. Good luck!
