red alge hight nitrates

i have a 70gal reef tank for 8 mounths and still having problems with red alge that covers sand and my nitrates are high i do water changes and it goes down for about 1 week but they go back up

any sugestions on what i might be doing wrong

 

Could you give us more details on your tank
How much Live Rock do you have
Do you have any other filtration?
List your Livestock?
What type of circulation (power heads, Pumps) do you have

i have about 60 lbs of live rock two clown fish 1 bleny
3 damsals two blue leg crab and 3 snails
aqua clear 500 two power heads and sea clown 100 skimmer

what is you nitrate level?
The Aqua Clear 500 What Media are you using in it? You may want to take everything out but the foam and make sure it's clean. for 6 fish a possible cause maybe over feeding. hard to tell. Maybe someone else will jump in

i just have the foam on and my nitrates last time i check was 50 how often should i be feeding fish?

I tend to feed daily others feed more or less. It important when feeding to feed only as much as your fish will eat. What I did was feed small amount (very Small) every 2-3 minutes. until the fish stoped the frenzy. Often if you feed a large amount at one time a lot of food ends up in your filter or deep in the rocks were fish can't get it. Try small amounts 5 minute apart so the fish have the oportunity to eat is.
Keep up the water changes every two weeks.

I feed a number of things. Mysis (frozen small shrimp) Bryn Shrimp, Flake food, Freeze dried Algae, Cyclop-eeze.
