The LFS has a wrasse that they have labelled as a Coris Wrasse but it doesn't look like any of the pictures I have found online. The color is more of a solid red with a dark blue tail. It does not have the white spots that juvenile Coris' have.

First of all, does this description sound within reason for a Coris? And if not, could it be a variety that is reef safe(r) and able to live in 40 gallons?

Edit: I just called the fish store and someone brought the fish in and told him it was a Coris wrasse, so obviously it isn't one. It's clearly some other kind of wrasse. It's a long drive to this store so a pic isn't really an option.

    Thank you,
    Doratus

A pic of the fish at the LFS would help quite a bit.

It sure would but unfortunately I didn't think of that while I was there.

Sounds like a transitioning Red Coris to me, neither suitable for most reef tanks nor suitable for 40 gal.

Only a handful of wrasses are suitable for both criteria.

In other words, what your saying is that it would be quite foolish to risk it?

Exactly, I have a red coris wrasse that I want to remove from my tank because he likes to flip over any new frags I bring in. You can see him in this video.

That was bascially my point. :)

As stated above, the reason coris wrasses aren't well suited for a reef is they will turn anything and everything over they can, in search of food. And they'll destroy your inverts. Plus they get huge.

With sincerity, Paracheilinus is the only genus to consider for a 40gal reef: Paracheilinus

They also get mistaken for queen coris wrasses when they're juvis. Either way, I agree, it would get much to big for a 40.
