Eventually, we'd like to add a mandarin to our tank. We realize mandarin issues and will be starting a pod tank soon. Are these fish compatible? We already have a pair of clowns

Those should be compatible, but given each and every fish's own personality, you'll just have to watch and make sure. Anything that scoots or perches, has the tendency to be aggressive to other scooters or perchers....

do you know how much of a challenge you are presenting yourself with? what size is your tank? i wouldnt do anything less than 75 and also with that tank youll need to supplement pods. i had a mandarin in my nano but he was eating frozen food

If you're referencing mandarin care, yes we do... Hence the separate tank dedicated to growing pods. I also wouldn't buy a mandarin that wouldn't eat at least cyclopeeze. If that is the reason for the 75, I understand. A larger tank provides a more sustainable pod population. The current tank is a 29 gallon Biocube. We only want about 4 fish total in it.

I finish my PhD in about a year and a half and then when a real full time job happens, a new house and 220 (I hope) gallon tank will happen. My question was mostly about compatibility, not intended to turn into a mandarin thread

well your tank is already probably at its max occupancy for a reef tank. also that tank is way to small for a mandarin, i said a 75 gallon along with extra pods, and at least 100 lbs of live rock. this is much more reasonable as some people at least a 200 gallon tank, but i think that is unnecessary. do not put one in that size tank. an extra tank with pods will help but wont last long term

Again, this isn't a mandarin thread. I asked about compatibility for the larger tank. If a mandarin happened in the biocube it would only be while the 220 is getting set up

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I have never had a red sand perch, so I do not know. But here is a compatibility chart.

    Marine Compatability Chart

There are quite a few available if you google them.

    Hope it helps a little.

if the question involves a mandarin it is already a mandarin thread. it would only be wise to get a mandarin while the 220 is in the setup process, but only for a few weeks

It was about compatibility, not the regular mandarin thread arguments
