Fragheads take note - our friends at Red Sea took a hard look at the current trends in our reef aquarium hobby and decided to redo the formulas on their salt mixes to address our demands. Next month we should see a new version of Red Sea's Coral Pro Salt with sky-high numbers that will make every SPS freak smile. At 35.5 ppt, we are talking 475 calcium, 1420 magnesium and 4.5 meq/L alkalinity. Sign me up. I would love to get back to the once every two weeks water change and put the dosing cups away.

The new formulas of Red Sea and Coral Pro salts are the product of years of research into the physiological demands of corals in the reef aquarium, and the basis for a complete program of professional reef care. Unlike natural reef water which has an immense reservoir of all of the 57 elements, a reef aquarium is an artificial environment that is constantly affected by the numerous ongoing biological processes such as coral growth.

Red Sea’s researchers have discovered that in a reef aquarium an optimal balanced ratio between what we call the “Foundation Elements” (Calcium, Magnesium and Carbonates) makes growth and other biological processes more energy efficient, ensures the formation of a robust aragonite coral skeleton and improves coral vitality.

Using salts which are made according to this balanced ratio removes the need to adjust the levels of the Foundation Elements after water changes and will significantly improve the well-being of all corals.
    Red Sea U.S.A.

The Red Sea is an oasis of living creatures and coral formations with many unique animals found nowhere else. Of all the tropical reefs around the world, the Red Sea supports the largest diversity of marine fauna and has the highest density of corals.

Over 72% of the formula for both of Red Sea’s salts is Sodium Chloride (NaCl) harvested from the Red Sea itself. During the solar evaporation process each crystal of this unique NaCl captures 45 of the trace and other elements from the natural reef waters giving us part of the living reef in every harvested grain. This natural element-enriched NaCl mixed with Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Boron and other elements provides a complete artificial sea salt mix with unparalleled homogeneity of all 57 elements, formulated in the optimal ratios for reef aquariums.

    Where is my drool smilie?

I run RSCP now. It is a great salt. With the elevated levels, I will definitely start water changes again. I have been seriously considering a kalwasser unit lately. This has changed my mind.

Sounds good!! Can I just switch salts? Or does it need to be a gradual thing...

The current pro salt formula is around 50.00 + shipping on a 175 gallon bucket for me so I hope it doesn't go up much. I'll make the switch for sure and go back to small weekly changes.

Looks like a great new salt mix.. Still kinda skeptal about not having to dose anymore.. I wonder if it's worth switching over from Tropic Marin Bio-Actif... Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

It definitely sounds very good. Levels look much better than Reef Crystals and the thought of finally not worrying about testing so much and using calculators, purchasing components for a CA, Mg and ALK additive is extremely appealing.

I also wonder what the price range will be for this salt... I hope it's not a crazy price tag on it.
