I have the same test...I took off the stopper on solution C, and i just stick the syringe in the bottle and draw it out.

As for the getting it to the 1.0mL mark, i get the same thing...i try to compensate for the bubbles and just try to get as close to 1.0 as possible.

And I also get the crust type stuff on A, It's just how the solution becomes over time when dry. Nothing to really worry about, I get the same thing and my test seems to be accurate, I cross-referenced with my LFS and a friend and got about +/- 10ppm. So with red sea (mine) i would get 1420, LFS got 1410 and friend got 1420 as well. When dripping in the small syringe, i push it in with my thumb, it gets really tedious. But it works!! Hope this helps!!

I tested the volume because it was just bothering me.

Using the plastic tip, I filled the syringe to .8 as marked by the rubber thing, not the liquid level. I then ejected it into a vial - all of it.

Took the plastic tip off. Resucked up the water and the water level/rubber thing both filled to .8. Seems the bubble does speak for the tip (and really, this does seem obvious to me now :-[).

So I am now sure on that point.

Thank you for the crusty bottle A, etc. experience ermano!

So if someone would please cross-verify my math in original post, I think I'll be confident in my testing.

    Thanks!

Why is testing Mag such a problem? Just bring the syringe plunger up higher so the "C" liquid is up to the 10 ml mark. And throw out that needle tip, as it's not of any beneficial use for the test.

I believe the "needle tip" is for measuring the 2ml seawater for testing "only". I've never used it for either. I measure the water to be tested the same way.

:uneasy: hey man, this is the first time I have ever used a syringe. none of my other tests have this. i'm not taking any shame from asking on how to do it.

    Peace

I had to quote this post so I can answer all the question...lol

#1 could be a leak, very possible, also check the date on label, I have the same test kit
#2 the small end: leave it off, fill the small syringe as far as you can get it, put the little tip on it, at this time the tip will produce a vacuum like action, holding the small tip let the air out of the syringe very slowly to prevent the tip to fall off, once you get all the air out carefully insert the small end inside the solution bottle "C" and fill again till you reach the 1.0ml
    line

put .4ml slowly to keep the tip from falling, after the .4ml are added drop by drop till the solution turn from purple to the finish color blue, subtract the amount use by the 1.0ml the remainder will be the number, just multiply X 2000 = Mg. ppm
remember to agitate for 2 seconds after every drop, this applies to solution "B" also

Sorry for the delayed response but I'll see if I can help. I use the Tropic Marin Mg Kit and while it is different there is some similarities and I am familiar w/ Red Sea kits.
On my kit I fill the syringe inlcuding the tip until the stopper reaches the 1ml mark. Like shown
    [IMG]
I know its hard to see, but its the best I could do. I liquid only goes to roughly the .8mL mark but the rest is in the "tip". I noticed someone said toss the tip as it is of no use, well in my test there is reagent in the tip so I NEED it on to do the test. I believe Red Sea's is the same.
My kit is slightly different as I don't need to do math, I do drop by drop until the solution becomes clear. I then see how much reagent is left in the syringe-according to stopper NOT liquid, and go to my handy chart and see what my Mg level is.
    Hope this helps!!

Also 10/10 is the expiration date so you are correct it is Oct of 2010, BUT once opened and the reagent is exposed to air you have roughly a year to use it before you get wacky results!!

    Good luck all!!

    Thanks DrFrag. +K

Thanks everyone else too. I feel a lot better about using this test now.
