So I just got 3 new test kits for christmas. I got a calc, mag, and alk test.

    First reading

    Alk- 14.0 dKH
    Mag- 1560 ppm
    Calc-550 ppm

These all seem extremely high to me or is it common for tanks that never had corals and that are old to have high readings like this?

Yes and no. You won't have much using up alk cal or mag. But your sw mix should have the same alk cal and mag numbers each batch you make. That means you have diff lvl of each in each batch. You could go to a cheaper salt mix since you only have fish.

Can it ever actually be lethal? And could I be doing something wrong testing because it just seems so high from never adding anything.

i never dose anything and my mag is up in the 1400s some times. my alk have never been that high. if you dont have any coral those numbers dont mean anything to you. i would deff get them under control before addin some corals tho. what you should do is test your water changing water before you add it to the tank, thatll let you know where your numbers are coming from.

Ok, I plan on getting corals soon. Those are too high for corals?

Probably not. The mag is 3x the calc, which is good. The alk isn't too high.
