I have a good amount of red slime algae growing on the sides and on some of the chaeto and live rock in my refuge - should I leave it there or should I get rid of it? I'm new to the fuge world and really not schooled about it too much. I currently have a 5" bed with some live rock, good amount of chaeto and some other plant which leaves look like green feathers, 10 mangroves and a S#!@ load of coepods living in the thing - while I'm here, anything I am missing??

    Thanks!

well the good news is that cyno takes up lots of nutrients very quickly. I couldn't tell you if it is bad in the fuge or not. I would guess it should ok, but it does spread easily, but i would only be guessing.

the fuge is supposed to be a swamp marsh of mess. you could test your Si, PO4, NO2,3. if the cyano gets out of hand it will smother the rest of the swamp.

thanks for everyones input! I must have just had a bloom because since the initial post it has gone down drastically and my mangroves have taken off like I have never seen! They must be absorbing most of the nutrients now :)

"Cyano" is actually a bacteria, not an algae. So unless you a UV sterilizer on your return, you will get it in your display. It will smother beneficial algaes because it grows faster then algaes.

this is true, but some people mistake it for an algae because it does use photosynthesis as its main energy source

but doesn't the UV sterilizer kill some beneficial bacteria as well?
