The tank is 9 months old and the fixture/bulbs 8 months old. I feed every 2 days with Roggers reef food. I just got my protein skimmer in this afternoon and looking to set it up this weekend. I keep my tempature at 77 to 78 degrees and I run my lights for 8 hours.

8 months is pretty old for T5 bulbs and as they age, they produce more of a red spectrum, which algae loves. I would get new bulbs, especially because seeing they are tek, they are likely to be overdriven, further reducing the life span. Im sure somebody will come in here and say no your good for 1yr with bulbs, but this is just my $0.02 :)

also, you could try tossing in a sea hare. mine devoured all my gha

That is my suspicion to that the bulbs are losing their color. When I first got them and I tried to look at them while they were on i would be blinded but now I can look straight at them and read the lettering on the bulbs with no pain. Plus the unit sits about 5 inches higher on my new deeper tank than it did on my 55 shallow tank. As far as the gha they are just on my locline return lines so I plan on taking them out and scrubbing with a toothbrush.

i would test both your Ro for tds and phos also your salt water source could have had trace of phyto if its NSW. I would start there and maybe cut back on the hours of lights for a bit see if its that.

Hi, Just joined this forum and noticed this thread. I had massive problems with Red slime which I tried all the above remedies without success. Finally I tried a product called MYCOSIDOL by Colombo Cerpofor. 100% success. red slime a thing of the past. it was gone in 48 hours. All you do is tip in the recommended amount from the capsules supplied. In my case, 130ltr tank....= 5 capsules. End of problem. Bought mine off Ebay...or look it up on Aquadistri.com. Give it a try....IT WORKS, with a 100% guarantee. !!

I just hooked up my skimmer today hoping that will take care of the problem. If all else fails I will defiantly look into that stuff.

I hate putting any sort of medication into my tank, but it came highly recommended. The red slime was beginning to saturate and kill my polyps, and looked terrible, so I thought, what have I got to lose ?. My tank is full of of mainly inverts with two clownfish and a Manderin. The treatment didn't affect anything but the red slime, and I haven't looked back. It only cost £10:00. Worth every penny. Can't praise the stuff high enough. :)
