My sump has been running for around 4 months now. The refugium section has caulerpa which is growing ok (not spectacular). My problem is that the 'fuge seems to be continually swamped with red slime algae so the caulerpa is clogged up and the sand bed has a covering of the dark red algae.

Any ideas of what's causing this and how I can stop it?

Is it better to go for Chaetomorpha or mangrove plants instead of caulerpa?

    Any advice welcome. Thanks.

Caulerpa grows fast but is illegal in some areas.... it's dangerous that it can get released into the ocean. It overgrows everything.
Also it can get into the display and overtake things.
