well there is good news and bad news, first it's not dead briariem. But the good news is that to me, it looks like it may be artificial because of the holes in each piece. you really don't see that in natural rock, at least not in 4 different pieces. It looks like it was engineered that way. This being the case, it is probably made out of cement, or a cement like product. However, I can't be sure. If it was used in another tank without much problems than I would say you can try it. But if you experience problems, look here first.

Don't put lava rock in with saltwater. You will be adding minerals that you do not need in the tank.

Yeah, those look like the artificial "lava rock" you find in pet stores and such. I've seen them and used to have 1 or 2 in a couple of freshwater tanks a few years ago. I want to say they are concrete based, but not for certain.

Look at this website: Feller Stone - Welcome to Feller Stone

They list chemical analyses for some of their artificial rock (including rocks that look similar to yours.) You might contact them to get their opinion on how to tell what type of rock you have.

    thanks

thanks for all the feedback, im still not 100% sure i want to put that rock in there...i would save me some money in the short run, but the long term potential problems really arent worth the risk i guess...maybe ill run a pump in a bucket and put them in there and see what happens
