    No, skimmers remove waste which would have eventually broken down into nitrates. Water changes can reduce nitrates.

    i really dont know what is going on with it. ive done everything i can think of, even 50% water changes dont work. im trying like crazy to get the nitrates down so i can get some corals.

    FWIW, A 50% water change should've reduced your nitrates by 50%. Plain and simple. If that's not what happened, then there's a strong chance your reagents are bad and your getting false readings. I'd suggest getting a second opinion from your LFS or try a different kit before doing anything else.

    +2 to those above. and It doesn't hurt to have a second opinion.

    Are you using rodi water? sometimes tap can have nitrates in it. What are your nitrates testing at? if they are off the chart its possible they are so off the chart that a 50% wc could only lower from 150ppm to 75.
