Reducing Phosphates

How do you guys suggest reducing phosphates, will simply doing a 50% water change or so do it?

You have to really get to the source of what is causing the phosphates. Are you using r.o. water? It can be a number of things. Overfeeding is one cause of phosphates also. The water change is only a simple fix but if the water that you are doing the change with contains phosphates(tap water) then your only magnifing the problem. If your not I would suggest using r.o. water and don't do that large of a water change at one time. Use can also use phosguard and other additives to remove phosphates. Personally I live by the natural method and don't add any additives to my tank except buffer. Just my opinion.

If you search, you will find that I have been strigling with this for awhile.


Long story short. Check your source. When I checke mine, that is where is was coming from.

To reduce you can you the Phosban reactor and Phosphate reducing pads, but I have tried them all, and not until you remove it from your source will you be happy.

From what I have read, the only bad news for phosphates is excess algea growth.
