reef additives

    hello, how often should u add additives like calcium, iodine,etc. thanks

    you will first have to test...and see what your amounts are now....and depending on the size of the tank, you should be able to keep everything in check with regular water changes and good quality reef salt....now if its a bigger tank, and or stocked with a bunch of hard corals (sps, lps) then you may need to go into dosing.

    remember never dose anything that u havent tested for....esp with iodine....it is lethal if you dose and it gets it too high

    Unless you have specific types of gorgonians, you don't need to dose iodine anyway.
    There is sufficient in normal water changes to suffice, and, there is also iodine added to the tank as food wastes break down as most food has forms of iodine in it.
    In my 18+ yrs of reefing I've not had to add any trace elements to any of my tanks, just the majors like calcium alkalinity and magnesium.
    I do water changes mainly to LOWER trace element levels, not to boost them, just because of the increased ones that come from the added foods.
