I just wanted to know if reef bones were safe to use? I picked up a small piece yesturday and I wasn't sure if I should:

1 - cure it with my uncured liverock before putting it in the dt
2- soak it in ro for a few days and place it in the dt
3- just clean it in ro water and place in tank

    thanks

Reef bones are basically dead coral right? I would actually bake it in the oven at 150 for about an hour. That should kill anything that might harm the tank and it will also off gas the CO2.
In my experience with dead corals most of the time they turn out to be algae magnets but not knowing what Reef bones is I wouldn't know how it would act in your tank

I think it's base rock. It's dry and sold that way. I know stores sell coralife reef bones to use as base rock.

Oh well that's different. you might want to rinse it in RO water but there isn't anything to die off

No no, die off. I got it at big al's in the dry rock section. The label said reef bones but it looks like the caribsea reef rock. I will post a pic of the reef rock and it looks like it. It's white, looks like some sort of dried LR, and has alot of white dust on it.

Oh OK I'd just rinse it well and throw it in.

I'm with Jason. Just rinse it in r.o. and put it right in. Glad you were finally able to find some cheap, base rock!!

Yes, it's only 4.99/lb. I also have 8lbs of LR in my 20g cycling. The ugly thing is the 20g is getting diatoms. If the LR has diatoms on it after cycling, how do I prevent it from getting into the dt when it's time to put the LR in there?

DT? Not sure what that means but you can't prevent diatoms from growing on anything until they run their course. After the tank has stablized, you will still get diatoms but if you keep your water clean, it won't be as much of a problem.
