It's not ignorance it's the fact that most countries don't have high taxes like us. Most of the provinces in Canada don't have high taxes, it's ontario, quebec, and the maritimes that do. It's because of everything, medicare, schools, maternity leave, unemployment, welfare, and slew of many other reasons! Why our saltwater hobby is soooo expensive up here is probably due to customs, brokerage fees, shipping, etc. I almost cry when I go onto US websites and see the prices of livestock! My yellow tang cost $40, clowns $24, Watchmen goby...$39, it's quite expensive. God a grounding probe is $33.

The cost of snails, Coral, fish etc. Is because in Canada there are not the volume of reefers. It has nothing to do with our health care.
Because Canada is only 1/10 the population of the US our buying power is not as great, that is why thins as higher price. Plus the cost of duties (YA free Trade is a joke), Extra shipping and handling.

Nemo. There is a great store that will ship to you. They are in BC and have great prices $1.89 for a Turbo
jlaquatic.com There are a lot of group buys I see on local Ontario forums you could get into

Your tax rate being 14% is certainly because of how your government is setup. The health care, the schools, etc. I don't see why you would say otherwise.

As far as prices of livestock go, it's not a co-op down here in the US. All the stores don't group together to increase their buying power. There are wholesalers and the prices are the prices. Buying atlantic stuff from west coast wholesalers and retailers is more expensive than buying from the east coast because of the distance involved from the source. It's no different in canada. Things cost more because of the distance involved. Shipping is a huge part of the price of these animals.

If Canada had one reefer that wouldn't mean that turbo snails would now be $125.99 each. Really "buying power" in the sense I believe you're trying to use it doesn't apply here.

Yes I understand that that the 14% tax is to support our health care and other social programs. What was stated was "Ok, just to show my ignorance. Is that because of the national healthcare or something else" My answer was No that is not why our Turbo Snails cost $5.00.
And through talking to retailers some of our costs are due to the fact that we have lower buying power. Very often Canadian Wholesalers but from a coral farm in Fiji. They buy 200 units. Mean while a US wholesaler buys from the same farm and buys 2000 units. You tell me who pays more even before the shipping has strated

    Jim,
Sorry I did not mean to come off in the way I did. There was nothing wrong with your question.
