This may have been ruled out already but would building in a surgebox help with flow?
I'm not 100% on how they work but have noticed them on a couple larger tanks.
Hoping Powerman might be able to shed some light on whether theyre actually effective or efficient at all?
Anyway, insane build!! props for having the marbles to do it!
builds like this are just another reason why I love 3reef

I don't really know much about them. Seen a few surge devices on line, but never thought they were too practical. Saw a couple tanks local that used Tunze Wave boxes. Pretty cool actually... they set up a circular wave motion in the whole tank. Pretty cool to see everything moving like that. However, they were quite loud... mechanical clunking noise constantly, and they take up a lot of real estate. One fella was taking his out for that reason. Seen other tanks on line though that build them in so that seems interesting. That is about all my experience with them.

yeah I think you're right about taking up alot of real estate.
I think the last tank I saw one on was something like 8'x3', but about 1' of a short edge was for the weir and surge boxes.
basically had a section either side of the overflow, with something like 4 holes in each and 2 tunzes in 2 of the holes. they would turn on, pump some water out, turn off/reduce speed, and the water would be able to flow back in. (is how I understood it anyway)
Wish I had asked a bit more about it when I had the chance now.
I have also seen big tanks rely solely on vortechs that were doing really well so can't be anything wrong with that option.
Hope all goes well! I really look forward to seeing this built.

The tank will be put together next month. I am building a wood stand for it. Th top will be made of 2x8s, legs will be 2x6s, base will be of 2x4s.

Bruh... I just came across this.. WOW big move there buddy...... you and I started our current builds about the same time. this looks like a big ole project.

I have always been a closed loop fan. as you know, I have one on my current tank powered by a dart. it works well, but if I truly had the money, I would do one of two things.

    1. add in an Ocean Motion to it to give an alternating current
    2. ditch it and go with the Vortec's. They are nice pieces of equipment, just extremely expensive. I wish they would make a poor mans version for me.

I currently use seaswirls on my sump return. they are really nice, super quiet and very reliable. I would use them again 100% if I had to. maybe add another pair.

Good luck in this one buddy.

Thanks for the response. Yes this is a big move but will definitely be my last tank(unless I get bored). I think I will be doing a combination of Sea Swirls for the return(debating on either using 3/4" or 1" Sea Swirl), A closed loop using a Dart, and either 2 MP60's or 4 MP40's.
