I only thought in terms of scaling. I was changing a gallon a day on my 90g. 30gs a month. That being a reasonable WC. Changing a 1/3 of your water every month.

My actual water volume was around 120g, but I thought I was changing too much. I mean my suplementation was good, nutrients low, water quality great... It was not "way" too much, and a gallon a day just worked well with what I had... but I probably could have dialed it back some.

So... figure a gallon a day/100g? 6 gallons a day/180g a month? Even matching me, you would be looking at 1gal/120g for 150g a month.... 25% WC monthly would be 125 gallons.

So you are looking at as little as 3 gallons a day for a 100 gallons a month being a 16% monthly WC, all the way up to 6 gallons a day for 180 gallons a month for a 30% monthly changeout.

And just to keep it accurate... Farley did crunched the numbers and a 1 gallon a day daily water change (30gal/mo) is the same as a 26 gallon single water change a month.... but again, even with that correction I still thought I was changing too much... changing water I just didn't need to... but it was so darn easy I did not see the harm in it. For you with a much bigger system, price would automatically become a reason.

Not to be a nitpicker here.... but it will show on every post if you use the quick reply box at the bottom of the page. ;D

    Otherwise, you are correct.

EDIT: What the heck..... has always worked before. Odd. Matt must have been messing with things again... DARN YOU MATT!!!!

Personally, I would do a gallon a day, If I could do it cheaply, and reliably.

I have been toying with the idea of a couple of solenoids and a couple ATO float switches.

Basically, a MaxiJet 1200 would be turned on filling a 5 gallon bucket. The float switch would turn it off. A solenoid would open dumping the old water to the drain, then close after a minute or two.

Another MaxiJet would turn on filling the same 5 gallon bucket with new saltwater again stopping with the float valve. A different solenoid would open dumping the new water into the sump.

The cycle would repeat every 24Hrs.

It may seem complicated, but I was wanting something that could be accomplished without the purchase of a Genisis. This could be done with standard programming on an Apex, ACjr, RK... whatever.

John, that is too complicated. I used my Tunze osmolator... but the setup is no different with any other ATO... you just need 2 pumps. One for fresh water on your ATO, and a second for salt water replenishment. Then you need a pump to dump to drain.... you just use your controller to turn it on for a set time to dump your amount, then you use your ATO to top back off. The relay is to switch to the salt water resivoir for top off, then back to fresh.

It is very simple, very easy, and can be done with any ATO and Controller. Infinitely scalable to do as much water as you want. How much safety you build into it is completely up to you.... as always... no siphons!!! For those that already have a ATO and a controller... I just can't comprehend why one would not be doing this.

I need to find that article. But 6 -7 gallons a day will be what I will shoot for. I might put the tanks under the stand and have valve on the waste tank to drain the water out.

Ok I was gonna say you are not nitpicking, but the " DARN YOU MATT!!!!" changed all that.

Money isn't an issue but at the same time it is. I know my limit on how much I can afford to do and not do. You have a good idea but it seems complex unless I am over analyzing your idea. But like the reefing game, what maybe simple to one person can be complex to another and vice versa.

    Point noted.

The only issue that I have with using the tunze, is that I do not use a pump for my ATO. My ATO is a direct pressure hookup, running off of solenoids. That would still require me to purchase 2 pumps.

I also would be leery about messing with my ATO system. It is a fairly standalone system and is rock solid reliable with quadruple redundancies.

Powerman::: How do you tell it what pump to turn on? and when?

So to answer your question, I'm going to dig up my thread so I can keep the info there for anyone else wanting to do the same with a different ATO.

...not that I won't keep answering questions that come up here RB.
