Thanks. It was just brought to my attention. Plus I like the sea swirls action.

And the increased power used and heat added will eat those savings. Ocean motions are not exactly cheap either.

What you really need to do Reef Bruh is crunch some numbers..... I mean forget the gyre, we are just talking flow... take a look at 2 or 4 MP40s 3200gph of flow for 28w per... 6400-12,800 gph for 56-112 watts.

Now go find a pump that capable of delivering 6400 GPH and see how ridiculously large it is and how much power it will draw. Then put it in a piping system with elbows, and other restrictions and see exactly how much flow you will end up with.

Most of a Vortechs heat is outside the tank, but some will be conducted. Just about all pumps are water cooled... meaning the majority of that power use is going into the tank as heat that you will have to remove. Unless of course you specifically get a air cooled pump and then it will just be added to the room. See how much that power and heat will cost you over a year.

Returns are just there. It is flow and you can use it.. sea swirls, eductors. I mean it comes at a high cost and you don't want to have more than you need, but you can use it for what you want.

Next best is a closed loop. You do save power over a open loop, and there are some advantages you can do with it. Put it where you want, keep your rocks clean. You have me interested... but how much of a closed loop would it take to keep my rocks clean or eliminate dead spots... 1000gph??? I don't know.

But to get your predominate amounts of flow... even equal amounts... a closed loop system and two MP40s... and it becomes painfully obvious how much better power heads are compared to closed loops. There are no savings, you are buying a huge pump with one, two, or three OMs which cost nearly as much as a Vortech and then you have to plumb it and pay for the power.

So there are advantages, and you might want a combination to accomplish what you want, but you also have to look at what it is costing you and what your are getting out of it.

I'll scuba dive when I get bored. Believe it or not its that expensive. Not if you get the deals.
