    Good Morning,

Has anyone used the reef capable led lighting system / pro lighting 24 hour lighting system by Marineland?

I would do your research on Marineland's Lighting. I have heard nothing but negative things about them..

Depends on your tank dimensions and color desires.. If you have a tank that is less than 15" or so, people have had decent results. it works as well as other LEDs but when deciding on LEDs you have to take several factors into consideration.

I would go with a more reliable and tested brand fixture. Other than using them on fish only tanks, I have never heard anything good about that unit.

Agreed. While I dont personally own one I have heard far more many disappointment stories than success stories. Lights shorting out, series of lights going out. Not sealed good & moisture/salt creep getting inside. Problems occuring in days rather than years where it might be acceptable. I would pass & look else where personally.

That is the first time I've ever seen that written about Marineland LEDs...Reef Capable or otherwise. I've heard some store employees say it before, hoping for a sale. These LEDs are on the high side of the price range for the specs, and on the low end of the scale for the quality. As others have said, pass and get something more reliable.

Absolutely not. There is a huge difference between different LEDs. And these are way down on the bottom in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and quality.

I think maybe I'm being misinterpreted. My intent is to point out that what is good for one aquarium isn't necessarily good for another. A friend of mine is using this light on his frag tank with great results. Would he or I use it as main lighting? Absolutely not. Wasn't trying to suggest otherwise.. Is it a competitor of Cree? No. It's not meant to be. Is it effective in certain scenarios? Yes.. Perhaps I should have qualified the op a little more to more effectively recommend or not. But I stand by what I said. I have read bad things about almost any product but I think you have to wonder what the expectations are.. If you expect considerable growth on the sand of a 24" deep tank, then the light is sure to disappoint. Build quality could be better of course but what do you expect from a company that is a mass producer.

For the same money he can get a better led... Why suggest something that has no place. If it was a considerable savings over Boostled or Orphek par30s then yeah.. You would have a point. But it's not. There are much better systems for the starting price of $160 that the marineland fixture costs..

Supposedly Marineland has fixed the issues of melting plastic and burned out leds with the second generation fixture which is now available. But as has been stated you can do much better for the price then this fixture. I personally wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole after reading the horror stories of the first generation of this unit. Also most of the things we use every day are mass produced and don't see that as an excuse for low quality and or reliability.
