Every week when I do my routine water change and skimmer cleaning, my skimmer goes nuts and spews forth skimmate for a few hours...

A 20 gallon water change can yield about a gallon of the stuff.

I use Reef Crystals. My skimmer is a EV-180...

    Anyone else experience? ---

Don't know if it might not be from water conditioner I use...one capful cause all that..

Other possibility is skimmer just kicking in after good cleaning....[IMG]

    Just wondering...

I have the same skimmer and mine does the opposite it usually shuts down its foam column whenever I add top off to the sump or change the water and I use the same salt mix. Then after a while it goes back to its original skimming action. I would call them I have spoken with the Aqua C tech guys and I thought they were very knowledgeable and great to deal with.

+1 on what crabby jim stated! mine do the same and some times will not make any foam for few days. do you stir a lot of debris from the rocks while adding the new batch of water?
could be something else, but by the way I use coralife salt and never experience anything like that.

I use the same and my skimmer (poor as it is....a generic Jebo) goes overboard as well. I actually had to drill a hole at the top of the collection cup and McGyver an overflow into a gallon jug just for the water changes because the activity was so unpredictable. I have to readjust for two days afterwards. Perhaps it's the size of the water change. OmarD, you do a sizable (15g?) water change weekly out of 125, I believe. I do a 20+ gallon water change on a 75 every two weeks.

I generally use no water conditioner as I get RODI. I used conditioner this last Sunday when I had to add tap water to top it off. There was no difference in qty of skimmate. It was a lot as usual.

hey omard i would bet my money that its the conditioner, sometimes when my di filter is getting low i add some prime(conditioner) just to be safe. and my skimmer goes nuts for a lil, not as bad as you say, but what brand is it?

maybe try some PRIME i used that aqua nova stuff back when i did freshwater, i belive prime does the same thing, but i think its geared more towards the saltwater. ive got maybe a cup worth of foam from a capful. (on the rare occasions that i use it.)

I am pretty sure it is your conditioner. I have a remora and when I used stress coat my skimmer went nuts. So I called the aqua c guys and they said it was the conditioner. Stress coat has a soapy additive in it that makes it do that. Marine stress coat doesnt have the soapy additive so its skimmer safe.

Nope, I've got to disagree...even with the manufacture. Here is why. I have used regular Instant Ocean with and without conditioner. The skimmer did not react in either case. I used Reef Crystals. The skimmer went nuts. I used Reef Crystals with conditioner, the skimmer went nuts. I did a rechallenge without the conditioner using Reef Crystals (had RODI water again), the skimmer went nuts. It's definitely the Reef Crystal formulation. And my skimmer is a POS. And I saw the OmarD's skimmate. It looked exactly like the stuff mine pulls out right after a water change.
