so they are selling basic RK lites now for $99...

    Basic: ($99.99)

    1 x PC4 (4 outlets)
    1 x temperature probe

    Here are the better packages:

    Plus: ($279.99)
    1 x Head unit
    2 x PC4 (total of 8 outlets)
    1 x SL1 (Inputs: pH, ORP, Temperature, 2 x Switch Ports)
    1 x Temperature probe
1 x FREE Digital Aquatics pH probe

    NET: ($379.99)
    1 x Head unit
    2 x PC4 (total of 8 outlets)
    1 x SL1 (Inputs: pH, ORP, Temperature, 2 x Switch Ports)
    1 x NET Module
    1 x Temperature probe
1 x FREE Digital Aquatics pH probe

i know it has wave maker capabilities, as well as other timers....

can someone explain the inputs to me, is it just saying this model is capable of a pH input that you have to purchase additionally....and so on...

    what are the switch ports?

also can someone explain the difference between having 4 outlets for a tank and 8...

anything else would be greatly appreciated....ive been going reef crazy as of late, i need to post some pics of the planted tank once i get the cam back from the GF...with the holiday near, this is the only thing im asking for

The controller has power strips that plug into it. Usually sold in strips of 4. It can control the outlets individually. The ph capability is that you have to attach a probe that goes in the water (Like a temp probe). You really want to know how much you want to control--now and in the future to make a smart choice.

Robman is correct, the Ph prode is just like the temp one, just drop it in the tank and the controller picks it up and your good to go. Just connected my RKL and only planned on using it for lights, but after looking into it more and more it looks like i'm going to have it do a couple more things. I like the Salinity probe coming out and the NET module is helpful as well.

But I digress...I don't know anything they can't monitor or control. The sky is the limit here...

I'm running the RKE with 4 power strips (PC4), the Net, and one switch unit (SL1). Monitoring DT pH and temp but controlling the Ozone generator with ORP. I'm considering adding either another SL1 or Possibly SL2 (I'm wanting to control a ventilation fan in the equipment room based on the room temp). And would like to move the Chiller and UV filter off the PC4 and onto a PC1 (2 outlet relay power strip).

I'm also constructing an alarm "hold" relay box so that a low sump alarm will "lock in" and require user action to restart the main circulation pump. This will prevent the pump from cycling. The "out of the box" RKE & RKL do not have a "locked in" or "hold" option on the alarm.

So, far, I very much like the setup.

I have the RKL level 3 which I guess they now call the Plus. The level 1 will control the 4 outlets that come with it plus monitor and control temperature.
To monitor and control pH you need an additional module (SL-1 or SL-2) and a pH probe, both of which come with the Plus along with an additional PC-4 for 4 more controllable outlets.
It would cost about another $100 to add the SL-1 and pH probe to the basic $99 unit.
The switch ports on the SL-1 or SL-2 allow you to do things like add the level switches for an auto topoff system or turn other devices on and off. They are coming up with new uses all the time.
Having the 8 controllable outlets is nice as I can have all my pumps set to standby mode if I want to spot feed or do maintenance, run fans if the temp gets too high, control my lights by time as well as shut them off if the system gets too hot, start and stop my calcium reactor according to the pH in the chambers etc.
One thing I am thinking about hooking to the switched contacts are door switches so under cabinet lights come on when I open the stand doors. The possibilites are endless. Check out the forums at www.digitalaquatics.com for many more ideas.

Only if the light you wish to control has a 0-10 volt dc, variable control, then yes. The same is true for moon lights, as the RK moon light system is programed with the lunar cycle.
