Anything can come to life in a SW tank if everything is going good. Base sand can become alive, base rock becomes alive, the key is "over time." It might take a little longer, but patience is a virtue in SW. IMO use all base rock... it will come alive with time, you don't chance putting unwanted parasites in your tank, and save you a ton of green!!
Premiumaquatics.com is a great site... good knowledgeable workers!!!!

Um base rock .....not every place sells baserock. i would call around and see if any LFS carry it.Online is your next option.

    "18" deep 65 gallon tank"

Sounds fine, will you be using the pc's for actinic? I would use 150' for your main lighting and go actinic with the pc's get the dusk/dawn effect.

I would look into VHO's or t5's instead of pc's. There are a few advantages ....longer bulb life, better looking actinic's, cooler possibly (unsure about this), Cheaper and better quality inthe long run.

    just an idea :)
