    Hey guys,
I'm finally starting to get some corals into my tank. I have a 14g nano and no protein skimmer and I was wondering how often I should be doing water changes to keep up the minerals for my reef? Once a week? Once every 2 weeks? And how much? Since my tank was cycled (December, 2008 ) I've been doing 3g water changes approx. once every two weeks. Yesterday I added the duncans (which eat meat and are photosynthetic). What do you think?

    Thanks, Kristyn.

p.s.- I'll be posting some picture updates of my tank soon :) The percs are starting to blacken and they are so cute, and the sixline has the best personality ever! I love my tank!

I'd say keep goin with what you got goin on you seem to have a rutine running for ya... And of course keep a eye out for coral changes and water chem levels to adjust your water changes acordingly..
I two have a 26gal Aqua pod.. I have a lil false perk with tons of personality..!!

You are really only concerned with a couple of things regarding water changes.
1- Water quality...... Got bad water that you can't keep up with? Get on a schedule of water changes to keep water quality at it's best.
2- Replenishment....... Corals using up calcium too quickly? Get on a schedule of water changes that that will re-supply the system with supplements that are being used up by your corals. This requires a quality salt. You can also scratch doing water changes if you choose to supplement individually and water quality doesn't require changes.

FWIW, I dont have much of a bioload at all. but on my 20 Long on either do a weekly 2 gallon change or a bi-weekly 5 gallon change, Depends on my mood and work schedule. : )

So, do you do water changes because it makes you feel better?

I think he does water changes because like many of us , its ingrained =10% weekly or 20% fortnightly = it is what we do innit

question for you Missionsix - do these comments apply to larger tanks? have I just changed 5 gallons of water depsite all my test kit readings being fine - simply because thats what I do every week?

what about minor and trace elements you cant test for ? and I was conditioned to believing you should not add anything that you are not able to test for and thus doing the water change helped to maintain those
