I recently installed the reef octopus bh 100 on a 50 gallon tank. Really happy with the skimmer so far. It's quiet and there are no micro bubbles at all. My only complaint is the lack of instructions that came with the unit. I was able to get it installed by searching for info easy enough but I want to make sure I have the intake set at the right depth. Logic tells me it should be just under the water surface but not so high it takes in air. I have it about 1/4 under the surface. Is that correct?
I'm getting wet skim so far as it's only been running for 2 days so I guess that's to be expected. I have the collection cup about halfway down.

You want your intake as close to the surface as possible while leaving a reasonable allowance for evaporation, assuming you do not have a sump or ATO.Your collection cup adjustment will have to be monitered for a week or two as well as following water changes to make sure it's working properly and not filling with water.

I have the same skimmer on my 30 gallon. I really like it, minus the sponge on the outlet tube. Its only purpose, to my knowledge is to stop microbubbles from getting into your tank. It has a tendency to clog after a while. I had to clean it atleast every 2 weeks after it had been on the tank for around 6-7 months, otherwise the skimmer level would vary and it would overflow... It was such a nuisance that I took it off all together. Ive noticed better performance from the skimmer since then. Id recommend taking it off from the start.

I agree with Norg on this,I have used a bh1000 which comes with the same foam ring for the return and chose not to use it.After break in(afew days)i had no problem with microbubbles.
