I am sure there are reef octopus skimmer threads but I could not find one to address my questions.

I have my skimmer set and it is running, here is what I need some clarification on.

    1. The instructions state that I should plug the skimmer in and set the water about 1 inch above where the neck transitions starts. The skimmer has a line that says min water level, is this where it should be set initially?

    2. When the instructions are referencing water does it mean the bubbles that the skimmer is creating, not the skimmate but the very white bubbles that are created when you first plug the skimmer in. it does not seem that you could actually get true water much higher in the skimmer.

    3. For the water return can I put an elbow in that points the water down into the sump vs letting it flow straight out, I kinda wanted to do what I did with my tank drain line where it just touches the top of my water in the sump. Just letting the water flow straight out is kinda noisy.

    4. Is there any specific way i should initially set the skimmer other than what the instructions say. I know they are there for a reason but I know you reefers out there have found ways to set it up better than the instructions say.

    Thanks.

I have a reef octopus skimmer also. I went to home depot and bought a T-pipe so the water will shoot into the sump. Mine was noisey also so I has to fix it. It still works great and it is silent. I keep my water level about 1/2 inch from where the collection cup goes into the base. When I say water level I mean where the bubbles kind of change color. You have something like 50/50 water and bubbles low in the skimmer and Ill say 75% air and 25% water higher up. You can see that change as you adjust the water level up and down. Put that line about 1/2 inch above where the cup goes into the base and let it rip.

I have a SRO 5000INT and did what Reef Daddy did with the T fitting but I also added a length of PVC pipe that is about the length of the top of the collection cup and put a PVC cap on it and drilled a 1/4" hole on the top and inserted a about a 1" length of RO/DI tubing for a air release.

I was trying to copy the design of the Euroreef and Bubbleking with their vertical tube design
