So I just installed my new skimmer an octopus nwb-110.. is seems like something isnt correct.. i have it in the desired depth of water, i followed the installation instructions. and i know the skimmer needs to "break in" but it seems like i am not getting enough air flow to create the frothy foam? what the heck is going on or am i freaking for no reason??!?! i attached some pics of how it is working.. i have adjusted the gate valve all open to all closed and am only getting this result... i have also disconnected the silencer to see if the intake hose was restricting... negative... nothing i do is making it look like i presume it should... when i put my thumb over the intake tube the water rises slightly but other than that nothing drastic happens,,, i hope this helps in describing whats going on.. is this normal? or do i have a defective pump perhaps? it just seems really weakk.. Help me 3 reefer guru's i know you can!!!

I have a reef octopus, and I can at least tell you that what you are seeing is not what should be happening. Mine bubbles all the way up to the neck of the skimmer, or over even if I adjust the valve enough. Couple of suggestions...one make sure that the water level in your sump is not as high as the outflow on the skimmer...just to the bottom is fine...but if it is over the outflow...it will cause issues. Also, in looking at how you have the smimmer in there...try turning the entire skimmer about 90 degrees... I am wondering if the fact that your intake on the pump is so close to the glass on the side of the pump is impacting the flow into the pump. Mine is unrestricted and it flows like crazy. If that does not work...send it back. I can tell you my skimmer kicks A$$...what you have there is not what it should be, by a long shot.

Brand new skimmers have manufacturing oils on / in them that prevent from operating normally. You can either run it how it is until the oils are all gone or take it out and run it in a mild vinegar water solution to "clean" the skimmer. I think this could possibly be the issue. not sure tho, because ive never had a reef octo. Only a vertex skimmer, and it does this when oils (from hands) are introduced to the tank.

+1 it takes a "break in" period, are you sure its at the right water level?

i placed my tunze reefpack505 in my 450 l tank, camouflaged it with LR only to find out a tube was DCed from the skimmer......*palm to face*....had to take the rock work apart and fix the issue. i have to say tunze tech support were A+ with the replies. so yea it might be a disconected tube though mine did not create ANY bubbles due to this. i still think you should wait a week see how it goes.

I run mine at 8 1/2". I believe it takes a new one a couple days(3-5) to break in, to remove the oils and build a coating. Remember every time you put your hands in the water or feed your fish it will take some time for the skimmer to get going again.

well an update... i spent most of the day without the boss' seeing of course researching this problem... seems typical in some cases... but for ****s i pulled it out and took it to the lfs... showed them they tested it and inspected it... then switched it out for another new one no questions... get home build the new one... DOES THE SAME THING!!! lol i guess it just looks weaksauce without anything for the fizzling foam to grab onto on the edges,,,... i guess its part of the break in.. so ill give this one some time to do its thing. i guess i freaked because i felt like it should be pumping more water volume.. aw well.. my bad.. i did a water change today to be on the safe side while this thing gets going hopefully its quick as i hear they are like overnight turn into a foamy mouthed monster out of nowhere.. thanks for all the help everyone

Question I have a Reef Octopus NWB-110 as well and it doesn't seem to be making an skimate. No frothy bubbles. I am getting bubbles in the chamber but nothing coming out of the top. Do I have it set up wrong? Do I not have the valve closed enough to make the bubbles overflow? I set it up to exactly what it says and its in the proper depth of water. I am not sure whats going on....
