I picked up a reef ready tank off Craiglist. A question on the overflows.

The tank is drilled on the bottom. Two corner overflows. Thus, two triangular columns are formed in each back corner. Water will overflow the top of the divider and drain out the bottom.

Here is my question.... why wouldn't you fill that cavity with live rock rubble??? Seems like a natural spot for drip filtration.

What do others with reef ready tanks do with that 'dead space'???

You need a standpipe in each overflow box so the water level will be almost equal to the display tank level and no trickling will take place. Without standpipes you will have lots of noise and possibly a flushing effect. It gets annoying real quick.
If you put rubble or other media in there you would be digging it out frequently to clean all the accumulated food and debris out or it would soon foul and cause nitrate problems.

I answered your PM. I use the Stockman myself but bought the parts to build a Hofer Gurgle Buster just to see how well it compares. Mine is almost years old now so newer designs are out there to look at.

+1 with all commments so far!

I used the Durso standpipes in mine and they work great, really easy to build too. Make them the right height with the right sized airhole and you will hear nothing.

+5 or 6...forget which. I also use the durso stand pipe and my tank is in the living room. I have no noise issues with the overflow at all.
