I have done this too John. :)

I also have a battery powered one that comes with a micron bag. I think it runs on c-batteries. It's not perfect - if you knock it against something it comes apart a bit and sometimes is hard to prime - but it does help a lot with cleaning debris out of a sump.

I know you said to keep it to myself, so you could have your day... but that was yesterday. :D I thought of pretty much the exact same thing when I was in the process of setting up a triggerfish tank. Couldn't have a CuC but didn't want a dirty tank either.

I used to attach my siphon hose to the canister filter I had in my FW tank to clean up all the gunk then I cleaned the filter. Was trying to think of a way to do something similar with the reef...since it's sand and can mess up a pump. Will have to try the home version of the vacuum.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but this statement got me thinking about something that I had been kinda building in my mind for a month or so.

Here's the idea for cleaning a sump thoroughly, and relatively speaking, without hassle.

I have a diatom (Vortex) filter I use to polish the water and rigged it to be a bubble algea eater and over all cleaning apparatus.
