    A few companies already make these, but they suck. I am sure a custom job would be better.

    Maybe some company could make a reef/sand friendly vaccum. Suck in water and sand, run it through a sort of sand trap to contain sand that could be dumped back in the tank after cleaning, while letting the crap and water go through a filter media before going back into the tank. The battery powered pump would be awesome if it would separate the sand from the water somehow.

    I use my canister filter with two long hoses, one is for vaccuming the gravel the other returns the water to my sump. The canister is filled with filter pads and filter floss and different types, it works great. I also clean out my sump with it. I just need to add a little water to make up the difference in volume with the canister.
