I have about 60-70 lbs of live rock in my tank and would like to add about 50-60 lbs more of rock... I am worried about adding live rock though, because of the die off and extra cycling. Since I already have a few corals and fish, that would not be good.

I have heard that even adding cured live rock will cause a mini-cycle. And have already experienced this first hand adding 10 lbs of live rock myself.

This has led me to pursue dry rock, and I'm interested in this florida reef rock from Reefcleaners... has anyone used it? I'm skeptical of mined rock, what could be in it, etc... plus, mined rock always seems to be heavier to me than real ocean live rock, so I can only guess it's much more dense (which makes me wonder as to the value lb for lb).

Anyone with experience with this rock, please share... I know that many suggest reefcleaners.org on these boards already.

    Thanks!

    Will

I have 80 pounds of it in my 90 gallon. I love it! It's very lightweight and has lots of holes for the fish. They love swimming through it! I definitely recommend it. It looks great!

P.S. edited after reading comment below. Definitely rinse this rock!! Mine was extremely dusty when it arrived.

Mined rock is generally just limestone which is very porous. I added plenty of dry rock, it will become live over time and coralline will end up covering it. Just rinse it off really well to take off any dust and debris. Florida mined rock that is!

yep, I'm not worried at all about coralline, I know it will be covered eventually... My main concerns are:

    1. Density - is it more dense than most live rock (yes, I know that it is old reef rock, but it could be compacted).

    2. Possible leaching of unwanted minerals/ heavy metals/ toxins

Never have bought John's rock but have dealt with him and can say he's one of the best vendors out there.

My Florida reef rock is definitely less dense than live rock.

It may be hard to tell but if you look at the white rock (newly added dry rock) compared to the purple "Live" Rock you can see that the Florida dry rock is much more porous.

    Pic in next post sorry.

Get some.. It makes up about 80% of whats in my tank. A 10 lb piece will become about 12lbs once soaked and "live" with bacteria. It is very porous which is exactly what you are after. Like people said before, a quick rinse will be in order..

Very good rock. Not toooo heavy and very porous. :) I ordered around 50lbs of it.
