actually this thread brings to mind a question I have wanted to ask...I am unhappy with some of my existing live rock due to the density of it, etc. (similar to DanKistner's pic)

How feasible is it to buy enough to "phase" my current rock out of the tank - while avoiding a cycle? (or at least keeping a cycle to a minimum?)

I have had to remove some of my rock to better increase flow around it. The more I see and hear about John's rock, the more I am wanting to phase most of my current rock out.

the feedback on this thread is great!

if i could do it all over, i would only buy johns reef rock. if that tells you anything. but no it wont leach harmful metals, and it is very good for bacteria to colonze and fish to hide in.

    Thanks for the replies everybody!

    Couple more questions...

when you bought your RCFRR (reefcleaners florida reef rock) did it come as a few large pieces or several small? I prefer no bigger than a cantaloupe sized pieces.

How many lbs would you estimate would be needed to finish off a 120 Gallon tank if I already have 50-60 lbs of live rock?

You tell him what you want the pieces to look like, and that's what he gives you! I was very specific with my wishes, and I was ecstatic with what he sent me.

general rule is 1-1.5 lbs of rock per gallon of tank.

RC rock is great. Half the density of the live rock I originally bought. I only bought 15lbs from John and told him I would rather have about 4-5 bigger pieces than a bunch of smaller ones and that's what I got. Within about 2 weeks of having it in my tank, it's already crawling with tons of pods. I would def get some from him and if you want to do it all at once, probably another 60-70lbs of rock would be good for you. Plus John has free shipping on rock if you get more than 30lbs.

if you dont like how they look (or need them very small for a mantis, like me) then a hammer is your best friend. i did that with mine and it looks very nice now!

Here's how the rock came for me...again, I ordered roughly 50 lbs of rock.

I asked for small-medium sized rocks. John works with you to get the rock you request!

The really really small pieces were the result of some chunks breaking off the larger rocks during shipping.

I split this order with a friend so I ended up with 25lbs in my tank.
