Just like the saws they use to cut casts. I didn't believe the doctor removing my cats in 1st grade so he turned it on and put it against his arm. Nothing happened.

I thought those were ultrasonic, but I guess this would work too. Pretty cool.

its the diamond coating that makes it so you can touch the blade while running. i use diamond coated wheels when working on glass and plastic lenses and they cont cut through skin but wil shave away your fingernails.

I used to work as a project manager for a computer engineering company. We were in a meeting one day and a manufacturing engineer was concerned with some cooling fans inside the computer. He was afraid a technican would get hurt working on the computer
when the fans were on. Someone, may have been me :), said the fan wouldn't hurt you if you stuck your finger in it. After the meeting we went to the lab. The manufacturing engineer stuck his finger in the fan and pulled out a bloody finger. Needless to say we added a fan guard.

But the blade on this saw will not hurt you unless you want it to.

Those saws are really cool, b/c they allow you to easily frag scolys, bubble corals, acans, chalices etc. that are fragged by cutting the flesh. That why you've seen those weird scolys that are half and half of two different ones. The survival rate is much much greater.

Bingo. This is the way it was described to me by inland for this ReefKeeper saw.

These saws have been around a LONG time in the glass hobby trade. They're not known as the best, but certainly a good deal for the money, and are quite popular. the next best saw is $500 or so: Gryphon C-40. I have one, I feel it's not as good a deal for the price, but is slightly better overall. ...slightly.

A diamond coated blade can and WILL cut you if you're not careful. I type with the scars on my hands to prove it. They're "safer" than a toothed bandsaw blade, that doesn't mean the wont draw blood. The motors are powerful enough that if you get a finger caught between the blade guide and the guard it will slice you open. Like any power tool, respect it.

They do NOT have any electronic braking mechanism. The blades are very thin, mine has a kerf (blade thickness) of .020", it's like a razor blade... a dull one, but it's thin enough to slice on its own. You can touch the moving blade, just don't press into it.

Also, I would ask Don about the blades and copper. The traditional method of electroplating diamond tools is to plate a copper base onto the blade to be coated, press the diamonds in to the copper (copper is very soft and the diamonds will embed in it) then the whole thing is plated over with nickel. The nickel coating is "dressed" with a rough aluminum oxide stone to expose the diamond, and in doing so some of the copper as well.

Now it's POSSIBLE that they are using a copper-free process, but I wouldn't think it would be economical?

At any rate, if it works, great. Inland has been around a long time, they have nothing to gain by screwing around, and I hope this saw works out for all of you!

p.s. CRL Diamond Laser Bandsaw is the top of the line in diamond bandsaws.... I don't think they're worth $1800 tho.

Mr. Hirst (owner of Inland) was very specific in his explaination to me that they do NOT use copper in any of their blades. Stainless Steel only.
He also mentioned that many of thier internal parts were changed to accomodate use with saltwater to prevent corrosion.

    Great post greysoul....very informative!

I have been using the Inland saw for a couple of years now, its awesome! For the price, the size and ease of use I would not consider another saw. Also, Inlands customer service is top notch.
