I have a chance to buy one of these,
But if after 12ft head ht- it pumps little or nothing- then no way.

Do you have this pump? Is this true? Why would they advertise this as Max head if it actually flows like > 600gph @ 12 ft?

Thanks for your objective, experienced reply.

12 feet is ALOT of head pressure. You will need a very large pump to get substantial flow.:(

The dart isn't a pressure rated pump. It's intended for flow rates more than head pressure. It still handles pretty decent head, but it's more of a closed loop pump than a basement pump.

You would want something gear for pressure like Iwaki that will pump 40ft, but maybe not as much gph.

it is alot to do with the impeller design that makes them pressure rated. a Dart has very thin long fins on the impeller that move alot of water but really dont have alot of pressure behind them. I think there are 4 maybe 5 fins on them. the impellers are very wide and thin. An Iwaki or Gen-x pressure rated pump has usually 6 fins and they are short and fat with a much smaller diameter. this generates a higher pressure in the outflow.

I have a dart on my closed loop. it is under my house and has about 8 feet worth of up and 8 feet down worth of pipe travel virtualy negating the head pressure. For my system, I have a Barracuda that is a much larger pump but still not pressure rated. that said, it does generate alot of pressure at my sump due to the 10 feet of head.

Thanks for the great replies all.

That does explain it well, thanks.

The Barracuda is so big, it would have good flow at a higher head pressure, etc.- But I don't have a chance to get a great deal on a used one of those ;-)

My last Iwaki lasted 12 years.;)
My latest one is going to be decommissioned soon if you want it.I believe its an Iwaki WMD40RLT 21.3 head feet.

Todd, elevate your sump off of the basement floor. Also, the water height in your sump puts pressure going into your pump, so your pumping height is actually less than you think. Why pump water higher than you have to? My Dart has been providing good flow to a 180 AND a 300 for four years now with no issue. I don't think your setup would be that much different than mine.

Ah, you forgot when you saw my sump that is in fact already on a stand off the floor.

Are you using the dart/snapper hybrid Jerry?

Yes, but why are you concerned about having 12 feet of head height? I'll measure mine tonight to give you a comparison.
