My hydrometer reads different readings each time. I am told to take readings out of the sump. I also read to shut off the pumps so there is no circulation. I also read to get a refractometer.

Does anyone have information on the temperature difference when using a hydrometer? I can't afford the refractometer yet..:(

Refractometers are cheap dude. I got mine for $27 including shipping on eBay. Here is a link. They are a must for anyone in the hobby. Very accurate. I just looked it up. This is the seller I used. It took a week to to get it, but it is a great unit. I use it frequently.

Here is a good article to read about your question.....

I could be wrong, but I think that OverThinker is a dudette. Hopefully she/he can chime in again and straighten this out;D.

Yeah, OverThinker is a girl, I think. And no, you really can't get by without a refractometer. It's required equipment. I paid about what John did, eBay too. Came from China, I think. I still have the funky wrapping.

My refractometer was an awesome christmas present from my bro-in-law. He was like, WOW, those are expeeensive... He had paid $150 for it!!!

I didn't have the heart to tell him he paid too much because he was soooo proud of himself for finally getting a christmas present I would actually like.

So I was just very very grateful...

Besides it being much more accurate - it is so much easier and cleaner to use!

Maybe you can't get it yet, but I'd put it at the top of the list.

    Definatley a Dudette....

Yes, I am a girl...I always wonder on 3reef if people know that because it is not the first time I have been called "Dude"...that's why I put pink all over my profile..hahaha

So, racking up the money but worth every penny. Now not only is the refractometer on top of the list but probably some new lights.

So I called my dad dude one time and he goes, "I am not a dude" and I told him that it was a glorified way of saying "Like"....or more manly of a way to pause and have a brain-fart before you talk...

Love the comment on women being overthinkers too...totally right..:)
