    First you need to check and make sure it calibrated. Best way is to use the 35ppt calibration solution. Then just put a couple drops of tank water on the lens close the flap and look threw it to see what you SG is.

    Also if you don't have the calibration solution you can use RO or distilled water and calibrate it to 0.0, but this is not as accurate as calibrating it to 35ppt
