refu flow rate should be...?

so i have been told different things, should the flow be high or low in the chuck of my refu that holds the culurpia?

 

slow for fuge

 

A 10 Gal fuge on a 30 gallon main system about 5 to 7 GPH through the refugium. Not mush more then a steady trickle is all you need . This will allow time for more waste to settle out of the water.

 

sweet, thanx. the guy at my LFS told me to have a high flow where in the sand bed area. but i have noticed that my calurpia has really been growing. the rest of my algae has, but not that. and i should have a lot of live rock in the sand bed area, right?

 

In a refugium you don't want or need any rock or shrimp crabs or anything just some deep sand and algae .. It requires no cleaning and messing with other then every so often go in pull out a few had fulls of the algea and toss it into a bucket of fresh hot water to kill it.
All you want the refugium/refuge for is a safe place for the plants to uptake the DOC's and the Pods and sand fauna can live and grow naturally with out fear or any predation by larger animals that would feed upon them in a main tank..
Don't per-filter the water reverse light it just 10 Hrs aday 12 hrs max and let it be.. There are so many here lately who think these are some new magic idea that they are just overly thinking them .. And trying to improve on a totally natural method of filtration. And slow slow slow flows ..

 

ok kool, i have 15lbs of sand in a 12in area. and when i got the calurpia i was told to just throw rock in there to give it something to hold on too. i do have one pepermint shrimp in there to eat the food that makes it from main tank, and a 1 1/2 lbs of small rocks. so the LFS lied to me, but i have looked at their refu and they have them set with just intake blowing at full blast with lots of rocks so that was why i believed them. thanx again, i will slow down the flow off the skimmer when i get home.

 

i forgot, i took someones advice from here and but some empty pvc tubing in there. after some time should i shake it out to get the copapods up to the main, or will they just slowly move up there as their population grows

 

I Dont know your exact setup but I would not restrict the intake of the skimmer maybee "t" off the output and use a valve to control the ref flow

 

Dont shake it, just let them reproduce in there, you wouldnt want us intruding on your "Private time" would you?

 

Slow the skimmer ? do you have the skimmer outlet supplying water to the refugium ? If so thats not a good idea you are removing the plants food source.. Reason I ask is I have seen it printed and stated that now they are even mechanical filtering their refugium water before it enters the fuge.
The shrimp is not needed and will just fade away and the chunks of pipe is all you really want in there for the Pods to live in and under but they really don't even need the pipe just the grass and sand will house them just fine .. Rocks are just a catch all again not needed its a smelly slimy mud salt marsh we try to create as a filter not a little fish tank
