I have a 65 gal seaclear system 2 tank. for those that dont know it has a wet / dry filtration setup built into the tank. after reading the refugium forum I want to put a 10 gal refugium in my stand. is this a good idea and would it benefit the tank.

    thanks

Its a great idea a Fuge would be very beneficial to any system . But if I follow you correctly how are you thinking of getting the water back up to the main tank from the 10 gal. refugium setting under the tank ?

Hell ya, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Im in the process of incorp. one myself. I was going to have the tank made, but they want like $200.00+ for it, so Im going to make my own.

Making your own is for sure the way to go, especially if you have a spare tank laying around. I had to buy a used tank, but even so my total build cost including plumbing was only around $150 bucks ($60 for used 30 gallon tank). It's a total benefit especially if you plan on housing fishes like Mandarins who thrive on pods. Natural filtration is the way to go. I've got a deep sand bed, chaeto and pods running in mine now. I've never seen my water look so clear. I was not predrilled so I use a 800 gph over-flow box with 1" supply and a mag 9.5 with a 3/4" return. She runs like a champ!

man you guys reply fast. I am on vacation using my I-phone so using the Internet is a little slow. to answer some questions I have not really thought about the logistics of the supply/return to and from the refugium. my main tank is new and empty so if I need to drill it I'm ready just need some advice for the game plan.

    thanks

Okay I wanted to do the refugium to host pods so I can have a spotted mandrin (sp). Since the wed dry system is built in to the back of my tank how should I plumb it? If someone has done a refugium with a seaclear system 2 please chime in. here is what the back of the tank looks like.

Please help I want to get started on this.

i've got a few tanks with aquasystems (in-tank wet/drys), and if they ever get converted to reef, I'll need to know how to plumb them for fuges too, so I'm looking forward to seeing the posts on this. I'm not sure where it would be possible to hang an overflow box with the filter taking up 80% of the back.

thanks for the post- karma bonus

Not sure about the unit you guys have, but do you have room to put the HOB OFB on the side of the tank?

I guess that is an option. I would prefer to drill and plumb the system to keep it a clean and hidden look. One of the reasons I purchased my tank was because everything is hidden. To get the water intake for the tank to the refugium where should I drill the hole to plumb the pipe? And then where should the pipe for the return line to the tank from the refugium be placed.

Hey! is that a overflow box on the right? if so, my LFS makes those into refugiums. They just raise water level in there and put some chaeto in there.....
