DO to room under my tank, I'm thinking about making my Fuge a display fuge. I will feed it with a maxi jet 400 and have it overflow and drain to the sump. ...

How hard is it to keep clean and looking nice? My fuge is about 22 gallons.

    fuge size

    18 x 14 x 20

I am planning on a display fuge as well. The advantage is another tank under the display. The disadvantage is that it will be less efficient if you keep it looking presentable. I don't think it will be any harder to keep looking nice than a heavily planted freshwater aquarium.

I think whats said above is correct. as long as its accessible it shouldnt be too hard. I know for my fuge its a limbo dance for my arm to get in there to make any adjustments. I would just worry about mixing up the DSB when cleaning the display.
should be cool tho! i love looking at my fuge and its kinda of a hidden treasure for me b/c no one else rly gets to see it or would even want to see it:p but i think its great.
Hope to see the final product if you go through with it!
    GL!

I'm thinking about putting it on a stand next to my tank. If I put it under my tank I will only have access to the top 1 inch of about 4" of the fuge.

this is mine... it is not hard to keep clean if you stock it smart. think of the real ocean, what eats detrus and fine particles that accumulate. place those organisms in there... worked pretty well for me ;)

Guys, I hate to burst your bubble, but a refugium is not a display. Here is a copy and paste from Tangster. This is awhile back when I was building mine. I can post the thread if you like. Not bashing, just trying to help. Anyway here is his post.

A refugium is not ever going to be attractive if its to do the job its designed to do. Its a swamp not an attraction . When one is working and growing as it should there is no room in it for a fish and the purpose is to export nutrients and if you house algae eating animals in there unless you toss them out also along with the exported grasses then you just created more waste to deal with. No fish no snails no shrimp not nothing but deep sand and grasses and bugs . But hey you can put these in there just don't expect it to do the job you think it will perform . Just are setting up another display tank not a refugium.

Refufium means place of refuge and they where developed and brought along to be a safe place for a Dee sand bed to be safe and to give the sand fauna a safe place to live free from predation and do their magic work and to supply some natural foods . Its just a nasty saltwater swamp/marsh

I dont want to start an argument or long discussion about this but my nitrates are 0, detrus does settle in my fuge but is consumed by organisms in there and broken down into simpler elements where then it is easily reduced completely by the bacteria in my DSB.
There may be alternative views on this subject but i believe from both experience and modeling the wild that a fuge can also be kept this clean and still be effective.
