So I know they sell a refugium light for this tank for like 50-60 bucks, but lets say I don't want to spend that, is there an alternative that will work decently? like a PC from homedepot or something?

I dont know enough about the JBJ set up
but you could possibly use a clip on spotlight E27 type, and put a 6700K compact flourescent lamp in it - that would be fine for most species of macro algae

I just put one of these on my refugium and I love it. It could work well on your jbj because you can dim it.

Just should warn you that no where can I find the wattage or color of these leds so its been kind of an experiment. So far I am liking them alot and my chaeto is growing pretty well.8)

well all it needs to do is grow the chaeto and we are good. its like 2 inch by 4 inch area back there or something like that. just enough for some sand and a tiny bit of chaeto. I just hope the clip doesn't block anything, i'm sure it should be fine though.

anything similar to the jbj nanoglo led thats cheaper? I'm thinking the robot led not going to be good in this situation as if I clip it on the back, even pointed toward the back side of the tank, a lot of extra light is going to flood out. not really good when the tank is next to the tv.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Try googling replacement lights for pico aquariums. I have a the 28gal jbj as well but used CPR lighting when I was growing chaeto. I have also grown it in clumps behind the rockwork where you could not see it.

    Good luck
