I was getting ready to do a 20 gallon sump/refugium for my 75 gallon tank. what I would like to know is. can you use a normal clip on light with like a grow light for the macro algae or is that going to be way to little light for it? if so how much would I need?

I use a CFL light from Home Depot. 6500K rating is the optimum rating for growing algae.

I use a 6500K CFL from Lowes. Works great. This is an old picture. Chaeto has grown about 8x the original size.

That clip on light will work, but I would suggest using multiple of them or a brighter light. The algaes we grow in our fuges are pretty shallow water algaes and can handle full reef tank lighting and will grow faster with brighter light.

Clip on bulb is fine. I use a designed 6500K plant bulb from Home Depot. I spent about $12. Take the cone off.
