6500k spiral compact florescent bulb in an aluminum reflector. Both can be had at lowe's or HD.

I done the exact same thing today. 23 watt sylvania 6500k spiral wound bulb with a $7 aluminum reflector. Thats what everyone I talked to recommended so I am going to try.

Make sure the clamp light is close to the water surface. I had to move mine down as it was too high and my chateo wasn't doing very well. i moved the light down and now all is well!

+1 to what everyone said. Only difference for me is I couldn't find a 6500K so I had to settle for a 5500K. I still have good growth from both my chaeto and my gracilara.

Or your local independent hardware store where the prices are about the same but the service is superior. :)

not to hijack, thought i can share a similar issue while we on topic :)

    hope u dont mind !

i just got the reflector with bulb at $6 from HD. The problem is i can feel the moisture around my bulb when installed because its close to the water surface. Is their a lower profile spotlight or one that doesn't have much height to it? link me!!
