I used the 100% clay, unscented kitty litter in the red bag from Aldi's. Got it for cheap. Put it in the bottom of the fuge under about 4 inches of sand and its fine. Doesnt cloud the water or anything now. It did for the first couple days, but now its perfect.

In my experience, it's better to use a deep sand bed (the same type of sand you're using in your display tank) instead of miracle mud. I ran miracle mud for a while and didn't see any benefit for the added cost. In addition, when you move things around in your sump, some of the mud will inevitably get kicked up into the water column, get into your return pump, and make it into your display tank (even if you have filter floss before the return). With a deep sand bed, the same thing will happen, but you'll never be able to see it since it's the same sand that's already in there... plus it costs less and does the same thing, so why not!?

With that said, I have a half used 1 gallon bottle of CaribSea Refugium Mineral Mud sitting in my garage (proof that I'm not using it anymore!). If anyone wants to pay the shipping, I'll be happy to send the rest of the bottle for free so you can experiment with it in your tank.

    found this interesting:

    Kitty litter clay

I knew what it was made out of but I didn't know it would adsorb organic nutrients.
