you can also use LR or refuge rubble dead or alive, and trust me something will definitely grow in them and also make a great place for pods and such!

It is funny...esp if you know my history and my "madness" in this hobby!

Actually, I did do some research on mud before I bought it...obviously not enough, and not in the right place. I never did find anything on kitty litter, did find on using LS. Also read about the pros/cons of using the mud versus LS, versus using LR. But what I could not find was really anything that stated using this type of mud was better then using this other type of mud.

All I knew was this time I was going to start off with the best of the best in this tank, versus trying to upgrade like I had done in the past. I had used some cheaper mud in my fuge on another tank, and really had some problems with that tank (more then likely not due to mud...but the timing was very close). So when the owner at LFS said this is what he recommends, and this brand is what he recommended as the best I went for it. (and this LFS does not have rep for trying to sell stuff just to sell it) (usually:eek:)

Hey, you live and learn;D. I guarentee this is not the only "waste of money" that I poured into this hobby, and I am sure it is not going to be the last.
But I did have a good laugh myself when I read this post

Unless you set the refugium up with a deep enough substrate to create a good anaerobic zone then you are not getting the benefits of any de nitrification . The clay and or aragonite sand will also help with buffering the system also . I like a inch or two of dry litter and then a 3 inch cap of good quality aragonite sand I use custom seaflor for its grain size. That and the nitrate coil keeps my NO3's at zero all the time.. One or the other will do the job for the NO3's but it cost nothing more to run them both..
