If my research has been right I need a pump no more than 5 times bigger than the water volume right?

5X bigger than the water volume of what? Your DT or sump? Or your car's engine displacement volume? Not sure what you are asking . . .

Do you mean 5 times turn over in the refugium?

For a fuge you need MINIMAL turnovers/hour.

So if you are asking if you should go 5X the DT volume through your sump/hour - that would be too much IMHO.

A lot of ppl will recommend something in the neighborhood of only 10% of your DT per hour so that is 50 X less than 5 turnovers/hour.

If you are asking about 5X of your fuge volume then it would still at least partially depend on your DT volume.

150 GPH through there would be too much IMHO.

You would want something more like 15-25 GPH.

A fuge is supposed to look like a dirty swamp so you do not want the fast flow you have in your DT or the rest of your sump.

So how does one get enough flow to tumble cheato, but stay under 5-10x? My cheato is very lazy, and VERY stubborn.

    You don't.

There are those that think cheato needs to tumble. You need lots of flow. Most direct incoming water down onto a horizontal plane so the water redirects and shoots across the surface of the water and tumbles the cheato. No you will not do it with slow flow. Those folks that belive that are in the range of 30-40x fuge volume.

Most folks go by a fuge being 10% of the display tank and flow should be 10x fuge volume. That is middle of the road.

There are those that belive in even slower flow. Like a swamp. And talk in the range of 1-3 times volume per hour.

You get to decide which one you want to be.

Agreed - cheato does not NEED to be tumbled.
