Thats fine. You do not want a check valve on a marine tank anyways ;)

I have my 20 gallon diy refugium/sump under my 20 gallon display tank. I drilled a small hole into the return hose from the refuge to the display, just under the waterline, so that if the power were to go out, the hole would suck air and break the syphon. Ive tried to make it the refuge overflow just to test it, and the syphon breaks flawlessly everytime. I also have the waterline on the refugium marked (two marks-one for power "on" and one for power "off") so that when the power does go out or my return pump does fail I know exactly how high the water will rise (about 2").

I created the pvc overflow with my 10 gal sump. But the problem now is the overflow cannot keep up with the pump. I used a ball valve with Tee to reduce flow to display while ejecting the rest of the flow back to sump. But still - there is not way to control this so that it's exactly right

I know that blocking the vent hole completly would bring the overflow rate to sump MUCH faster - but then - it would defeat the purpose of overflow so the siphon will NOT stop even after the TEE fitting positioned near top of display tank.

Can i put a cap on the vent and make a small hole. will that "increase" overflow rate>?

I plan to set up a display refugium next to my display tank within the new couple weeks, and will be doing the same thing. The tank will sit next to the display, be fed by a small pump, and will return via gravity.
